What do you want AI to leave for you?

"If AI could do your job, what would you want it to leave for you?"

I asked a group of L&Ds this at the AI Transformation Cafe by L&D SHAKERS a few weeks back.

We've all been talking about the things AI can take. Nobody is pausing to answer what they want to keep.

Three tensions I haven't been able to stop thinking about:

  1. Can vs should
AI can write your content, design your decks, and summarise your meetings. But handing something over because you're able to isn't the same as deciding it's worth handing over. Most L&Ds haven't made that distinction consciously.

  2. AI vs human
The handover list comes easily. The "what only I can do" list didn't. If you can't articulate what's yours, you're at risk of giving it away by default.

  3. Efficiency vs creativity
L&D is both science and art. There's craft in it. Our obsession with efficiency - faster, leaner, more output - might be quietly killing the part of the work that actually makes it good. When you optimise everything, personality is usually the first casualty.

So if AI could do your job, what would you want it to leave for you?
