Learning Nerd’s Diary #01 👾

Hi folks!

Welcome to the the Learning Nerd’s Diary.

In the spirit of transparency and keeping up with my penchant for documenting things - giving this another go. The last version of this journal died before it saw the light of day but since we’re in the spirit of rambling (rubble, ramble - it’s all the same) - will try not to overthink it this time.

Learning nerd - huh what?!

Learning is ubiquitous and extends way beyond textbooks or exams. A learning nerd is someone I guess who is fuelled by learning new things and gets a kick out of it. This by no means is a term that is original, but comes closest to one that I feel describes me best.

With this newsletter, you sit short-gun to my learning journey and everything that comes along with it - the crazy, exciting, boring, failure, and doubt (not in that order hopefully!). So buckle-up folks!

Coolest Things I Learned This Week

Take a commercial break: Growing up with two workaholic parents, work comes easy to me - its the breaks that have been hard. The pandemic has blurred boundaries between our professional and personal lives. On one of those bleak night a couple of weeks back (you know which one - we’ve all been there), I took a random decision to put in a week-long around my birthday. And while I kept second guessing this decision since then, it was only when I got up on my first day of leave that I realised just how much I needed this break. I absolutely love what I do but there was so much mental real estate that had suddenly freed up. I’m really looking forward to the rest of the week!

Building your own creative practice: I’m my happiest on days when I create something that I can call my own - even if it is a simple home-cooked meal at the end of a long day. One of my favourite ted talks of all times by Elizabeth Gilbert talks about this idea of an ‘inner creative genius’. Creative professionals - no matter what your ‘creative poison’ is, are happiest when they create something of their own. This is often also why a lot of us are unhappy in jobs - because when we start working, we stop creating. Time to change that - don’t you think?

Find the Tom to your Jerry: Earlier this week I took out my camera for the first time in months! There was a time where I used to go out and shoot every single day but now it was something I was procrastinating about - how sad. Last Thursday, I caught hold of a friend and we took out cameras out for a spin. For that one hour we were like two kids in a candy store - just giddy with the excitement of doing something we love and finding someone to share it with.

Here is my favourite shot from that day -

That's it for this week folks, see you around!
